Journey Fitness + Wellness Newsletter - May 1, 2022
Newsletter - May 1, 2022
April’s showers have washed away the last of the snow and brought on the beautiful blossoms of spring flowers and the greening of lawns. I’m so looking forward to being able to teach yoga outdoors this summer both at the Lakefront Studio and Lockwood Park in the Village of Westport. Stay tuned for the details!
There are a few new class series starting up in May with both in-studio and online options to attend. In-studio space is limited to three people at this time so be sure to register early to secure your spot. See below for more information. It is never too late to register for a series even if it has already started. The cost will be prorated.
Private or semi-private individual or small group class(es) can also be arranged to support you on your health and fitness journey. Semi-private classes are also a great way to connect with your family and friends this Spring or Summer to celebrate a special event like a soon-to-be bride, a birthday, retirement, special weekend… Please contact me for more information and to plan your special class or event!

“Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.” - - B.K.S. Iyengar

Yoga Wisdom - - Drishti
Drishti is a Sanskrit word which means steady and focused gaze. Focusing the mind or the eyes on a focal point during yoga practice improves concentration, mindfulness and balance. In asana practice, when practicing balance postures such as Tree Pose (vrikshasana), you might hear me say, “Focus the gaze on a steady point ahead.” When seated for meditation, you might hear me say, “Drishti inward onto your breath” to anchor your attention. When the eyes move, the mind and attention follow. The practice of drishti enables the practitioner to engage in one-pointed focus stilling the fluctuations of the mind. Gazing at a candle flame (tradaka) is another meditation technique.
Other drishti points that you may be directed to during asana practice include:
The tip of the nose
Between the eyebrows
The navel
The right side of the body in twist poses
The left side of the body in twist poses
Upward in Warrior I pose
Off the mat, drishti helps to keep your attention on your intentions and goals. When you are clear about your intentions, it is easier to stay focused. Why do you commit to your yoga practice? For me, it is to help keep me focused and balanced on how I wish to spend my life’s precious energy.
